Top 10 Qualities to Look for in a Recovery Coach

Recovery Coaching is a solutions-focused process which helps clients remove personal, social, and environmental obstacles to a successful recovery. A sober coach does this through a process of change-talk and solutions-building. Successful recovery coaches help clients shift their thinking from limited either-or choices to an array of these-those options and opportunities.

Your potential recovery coach should have the following qualities:

  • Uses a process of inquiry and personal discovery to build a client’s level of awareness, self-confidence, and responsibility for a client’s own recovery.
  • Is accepting of a client’s present situation.
  • Is aware that there are several pathways to sobriety. Allows you the freedom to choose the path that is most appropriate for you.
  • Is action-oriented. Nudges a client closer to self-empowerment.
  • Is transitional and doesn’t focus past traumas. The recovery coach is known for staying in the present with a focus on the future. (“Where are you now, and where do you want to be tomorrow, next week, next year.”)
  • Is collaborative rather than authoritative. (Such as: “Let’s look at this together”)
  • Is solutions-focused. Helps clients become their own rescuers.
  • Teaches clients how to question their own faulty thinking patterns and develop a doable/realistic life plan.
  • A client’s well-being is always the leading principle in recovery coaching.
  • Views the client as a whole being who has viable options for recovery, and not as moral failures or as broken pieces in need of repair.

Starting Point’s recovery belief system includes: “You have options and are accountable only to yourself; and regardless of what you have been through, you have the strength and the power within to change the outcomes.”
